Song Facts

“Wash Us in the Blood” serves as the lead single to Kanye West’s upcoming studio album, reportedly titled God’s Country. The title points to West’s Christian faith—to be “washed in the blood” infers acceptance of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice. The Bible talks about the cleansing power of Christ’s blood in 1 John 1:7.

Kanye debuted an instrumental version during the premiere of his opera, Nebuchadnezzar, on November 24, 2019. The record was later mentioned in his April 2020 GQ interview, titled “Inside Kanye West’s Vision for the Future,” where it was referred to as “Washed in the Blood” and described as having “hard drums and Yeezus-like industrial horror noises.” A demo version leaked on June 22, 2020.

On June 26, 2020, Kanye validated the song in a Twitter post and implied that the music video was directed by cinematographer Arthur Jafa. In May 2020, Jafa said that he had worked with Kanye on a video from his forthcoming album, during a conversation with Michèle Lamy:

It’s from his new record, it’s called God’s Country. And this will be like the first single off of it. I don’t know if I’m supposed to not be announcing it […] but yeah, it’s from the new record…

Three days later, on June 29, 2020, Kanye confirmed the release of the song and the album’s title in a Twitter post—the official music video premiered the following day.
