Lyrics for Up from the Muck by As Friends Rust:

We slave, but never save
We starve, but never slim
Try so hard, but rarely win
We slowly sink inside our skin

We sow, but never reap
We rest, but never sleep
And those elusive smiles
Never seem to keep

I see that crushing sadness in us all
Won't you take my hand?
That ceaseless sorrow in us all
Won't you take my hand?

The news is never good
The future's looking bleak
We want to rise and fight, but
We're just so tired and weak

We breathe, but feel no calm
We're thinking awful thoughts
It seems that all is lost
Believe me friend it's not

I see that crushing sadness in us all
Won't you take my hand?
That ceaseless sorrow in us all
Won't you take my hand?

We're down but we're not out
We're down but we're not out
We're down but we're not out
We're down but we're not out
We're down but we're not out
We're down but we're not out
We're down but we're not out
We're down but we're not

I see that crushing sadness in us all
Won't you take my hand?
That ceaseless sorrow in us all
Won't you take my hand?

(We're down but we're not out)
Black cloud casting shadows on us all
(We're down but we're not out)
Won't you take my hand?
(We're down but we're not out)
I see that crushing fucking sadness in us all
(We're down but we're not out)
Someone take my hand

Song Facts

Released on March 23rd 2020, during the Corona Virus quarantine, “Up From The Muck” is the first new As Friends Rust song in nearly twenty years.

As Friends Rust vocalist Damien Moyal says about the song. “The song was written to be a hopeful message to everyone struggling to keep up or stay afloat, who may at times feel that they’re alone in their battles against financial, physical or emotional demons. It’s a reminder that, sadly, each of us is at war with something, and regardless of our circumstances or differences, we’re all strangely united in those shared experiences of smallness and vulnerability.”

“When these lyrics were written a few months ago, life was relatively normal. But today, standing at the dawn of a global pandemic, the song feels even more fitting. Our battles will be amplified in the days and months to come, and it’s absolutely imperative that people, especially in their isolation, know that they’re not facing these feelings or fears alone. ”

“We hope that sending this song into the world will, at least for a moment, inspire some sense of togetherness.”
