Lyrics for Sugar by Sufjan Stevens:

Verse 1
Is someone gonna cut me some slack?
Now that it’s a quarter to ten
Come on, baby, gimme some sugar
You tell me that you wanna fall back
But I don’t wanna do this again
Come on, baby, gimme some sugar

Verse 2
You stand up straight, now stand real tall
And wipe that writing off the wall
This is the right time
Come on, baby, gimme some sugar
Now put one foot in front of the other
Take a breath, now breathe, my lover
Let’s take up this lifeline
Come on, baby, gimme some sugar

Verse 3
Is that the weight of the world on your back?
Surrender with that colorful flag
Come on, baby, gimme some sugar
Yeah, they’ve been selling us this fiction as fact
But I don’t wanna lose you again
Come on, baby, gimme some sugar

Chorus
Don’t make me wait (Don’t make me wait)
Don’t make me wait too long (Don’t make me wait too long)
Don’t make me sing the sad song
Come on, baby, gimme some sugar
Don’t make me wait (Don’t make me wait)
Don’t make me wait too long (Don’t make me wait too long)
Don’t make me sing the sad song
Come on, baby, gimme some sugar

Verse 4
All the shit they try to feed us
Don’t drink the poison or they’ll defeat us
This is the right time
Come on, baby, gimme some sugar
Don’t break my heart, don’t break my flow now
And all this rage has got to go now
Let’s take up this lifeline
Come on, baby, gimme some sugar

Chorus
Don’t make me wait (Don’t make me wait)
Don’t make me wait too long (Don’t make me wait too long)
Don’t make me sing the sad song
Come on, baby, gimme some sugar
Don’t make me wait (Don’t make me wait)
Don’t make me wait too long (Don’t make me wait too long)
Don’t make me sing the sad song
Come on, baby, gimme some sugar

Don’t make me wait (Don't make me wait)
Don’t make me wait too long (Don’t make me wait too long)
Don’t make me sing the sad song
Come on, baby, gimme some sugar
Don’t make me wait (Don't make me wait)
Don’t make me wait too long (Don’t make me wait too long)
Don’t make me sing the sad song
Come on, baby, gimme some sugar

Don’t make me wait
Don’t make me wait too long
Don’t make me sing the sad song
Come on, baby, gimme some sugar
Don’t make me wait
Don’t make me wait too long
Don’t make me sing the sad song
Come on, baby, gimme some sugar

Don’t make me wait
Come on, baby, gimme some sugar

Song Facts

“Sugar” is the thirteenth track and third single from Sufjan Stevens' eighth studio album, The Ascension. The track released on September 15, 2020, just a little over a week out from the full album release. The track is accompanied by a music video directed by Ezra Hurwitz.

Stevens explained the song on Asthmatic Kitty’s site: “‘Sugar’ is ultimately about the desire for goodness and purity (and true sustenance),” says Sufjan. “On the surface the song is just a string of clichés, but the message is imperative: now is the time to gather what is good and pure and valuable and make it your own, and share it with others. Feed your soul and speak new life into those around you. Give each other love, respect and sacrifice. Relinquish all the old habits, all the old ways of thinking and doing, all former practices—‘business as usual’—and bring new life to the world. This is our calling.”
