“First post. Seems quite apt to post a Purple Mountains song, due to the recent loss of a true poet in David Berman. The video blows my mind for this song too. From the 'disclaimer' at the start and the somewhat ironic Maneki-Neko (lucky charm), to the sheer honesty of the video itself. Such painful emotions, yet he confronts them head on and with his typically dark lyrics coated in a dry sense of humour. A real great who will be sorely missed. RIP David. ”

Lyrics for Darkness and Cold by Purple Mountains:

Verse 1
The light of my life is going out tonight
As the sun sinks in the west
The light of my life is going out tonight
With someone she just met
She kept it burning longer than I had right to expect
The light of my life is going out tonight
Without a flicker of regret

Chorus 1
Darkness and cold, darkness and cold
(Darkness and cold, darkness and cold)
Rolled in through the holes in the stories I told
Conditions I'm wishing weren't taking control
Darkness and cold, darkness and cold

Verse 2
The light of my life is going out tonight
And she don't look too depressed
The light of my life is going out tonight
In a pink champagne Corvette
I sleep three feet above the street
In a Band-Aid pink Chevette
The light of my life is going out tonight
Without a flicker of regret

Chorus 1
Darkness and cold, darkness and cold
(Darkness and cold, darkness and cold)
Rolled in through the holes in the stories I told
Conditions I'm wishing weren't taking control
Darkness and cold, darkness and cold

Chorus 2
Darkness and cold, darkness and cold
(Darkness and cold, darkness and cold)
Patiently encroaching on the animal
The weather of forever retaking control
Darkness and cold, darkness and cold

Chorus 1
Darkness and cold, darkness and cold
(Darkness and cold, darkness and cold)
Rolled in through the holes in the stories I told
Conditions I'm wishing weren’t taking control
Darkness and cold, darkness and cold

Outro
Darkness and cold, darkness and cold

Song Facts

In an interview about this album, David Berman discussed his wife and him drifting apart, and revealed that writing this song was a way of dealing with the painful prospect of her moving on romantically:

I knew that I was gonna have to deal with that some day, with her being with someone else, and I found that idea excruciating. And so I wrote about it, to experience it first, through this song.
