Lyrics for Crowhurst's Meme by Ben Howard:

Verse 1
Terribly sorry it don’t quite pass
Found a riverbed
Feeling
Over the counter happy
Under the cosh I’d say
Found a radio silence
Strangeness breathing
Saccharine party baby
Laughing and ha horrah!
Well, what’s a riverbed sleep?
Coveting, cheating

Chorus
When I wake up, I’m a long way out
When I wake up, I’m a long way out
When I wake up, arms around you
When I wake up, I’m a long way out

Verse 2
Terribly sorry I’m not quite right
Point fiddler
Reed riddling
Saccharine party baby
Laughing and ha hoorah!
Well that’s a riverbed sleep
What’s this feeling?
And they’ll murder me
If I come back winning
Yeah they’ll murder me

Chorus
When I wake up, I’m a long way out
When I wake up, I’m a long way out
When I wake up, arms around you
When I wake up, I’m a long way out
When I wake up, I’m a long way out
What’s the mercy, now I found it out
What’s the mercy, now I found it out

Song Facts

This song, along with “What a Day“ was released on Ben Howard’s official YouTube account on 11th of December 2020, without any prior notice or announcements and taken away after a couple of hours. This was most probably an accidental release.

The track was officially released on 2 February, 2021.

Speaking about “Crowhurst’s Meme”, Howard said:

This song was firstly inspired by a wonky synth guitar part that I had which had a kind of seasick quality to it, which in my head had a tenuous link to the Donald Crowhurst story – the famous tale of the amateur British sailor who died whilst sailing around the world.

These two things seemed to marry and so it became a sort of exploration of the undocumented universal side of the story.
